The House of Fontanini was founded in 1908 by Emanuele Fontanini in a small Italian village called Bagni di Lucca located in Tuscany. Today, the House of Fontanini is run by the fourth generation of the Fontanini family. Members of the Fontanini family, Emanuele, Stefano, Marco, Luca and Alessandro all visit the United States making special appearances.
Creating a Fontanini Figure
The Fontanini family closely monitors the production of all figures. A single figure can take up to two years to create and cost thousands of dollars. There are nine basic steps in the creation of a figure, including each figure being hand painted by artisans in their homes in Italy.
Story Cards
Each Fontanini 5" figure comes in a photo gift box with a Story Card. The Story Card is a unique feature only available in the Fontanini Collection. Extensive research is conducted to determine what life was like in 1 AD during the time of Christ's birth. Each Story Card is based on historical facts with an artistic interpretation.
During the company's tenure in collectibles, few lines have sustained growth like Fontanini Heirloom Nativity, exclusively distributed by Roman since 1973. With this world-famous name in Italian craftsmanship, Jedlinski positioned Roman as the singular North American source for the sought-after collection, prized for its lifelike sculpting, meticulous hand painting and attention to detail. Fontanini Heirloom Nativity include figures and accompanying structures in seven different sizes ranging from tiny miniatures to nearly life-size pieces; and a wide selection of ornaments, musicals, and other gifts featuring Fontanini art.
When you think about a Nativity set, the one company that comes to mind is Fontanini. Fontanini makes Nativity pieces in sizes from 2.5" to 50" tall" -- a size for every home. If you are new to collecting, the basic 5", seven piece set is a wonderful way to start. Then, once you are "hooked", there are numerous additional characters and pieces to add to your vignette.
The Fontanini web site has an interesting history on how the Fontanini figures are produced, but one fact that stood out was -- each Fontanini figure is hand painted, except for the eyes. A separate group of artisans do all the eyes on the figures to get just the right look. Perhaps I found this interesting because of the glass ornaments I collect, the eyes on a piece can make all the difference in whether or not I want the piece.
The smaller sets are made of Polymer and the larger pieces are done in a marble-based resin. My first reaction to the Fontanini Nativities was any item this expensive should be made of porcelain. But the detail and workmanship on the figures helped change my mind. And if this was out or porcelain it would probably be even more expensive. Actually, it is nice to have something that is basically unbreakable!
